This paper finds fault with the developmental strategies of newly industrialized countries in Asia and, highlighting the 1997 Asian financial crisis, submits a knowledge economy model as an alternative. It presents a framework for knowledge management at the micro level and outlines implications for public policy. The author calls on governments throughout the region to take a proactive stance and help facilitate a transition.
