This paper explores the impact of government policies promoting competitiveness in Poland's manufacturing sector. It provides different measures of competitiveness and assesses the competitiveness of Poland's manufacturing sector on domestic and international markets. The authors compare the competitiveness in these markets and describe government interventions from 1996-2003, including income (corporate and personal) taxes imposed on enterprises, excise taxes, VAT, depreciation rates, subsidies and social security contributions. The paper concludes that competitiveness of the Polish manufacturing sector can be increased through further privatization and restructuring state-owned companies.
