This report explores currency crises in Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova and Turkey in the late 1990s. It reviews the domestic financial crisis in Bulgaria and the international spreading of the Russian crisis. The authors demonstrate that Ukraine and Moldova were affected by the Russian crisis, highlighting that shared initial economic vulnerabilities rendered a crisis inevitable. They also argue that Turkey avoided a currency crisis because of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank support.
