This paper scrutinizes the depth and defines the limits of the relations between the US and India after 11 September 2001. The authors explain that India will not sacrifice its autonomy, which serves principally to preserve its own interests and assert its own principles, on the altar of an alliance with the superpower. Instead, it will strive to maintain good relations with the US without surrendering fundamental principles of its own policies. Since the US policy toward Asia relies on New Delhi, the Indians have the best chances of succeeding with this attitude.
