This brief examines the Latin American economies before and after the 2008 global financial crisis. It asserts that even before 2008, during five consecutive years of economic growth, Latin America's income per-capita gap relative to high-income countries widened and poverty remained high. The author, together with other prominent experts, identifies policies that would avoid these growing pains and achieve accelerated, sustained growth that reduces both poverty and inequality.
