This paper explores challenges to Switzerland's foreign policy before the rising pressure of its special role in international relations and the long-term implications of globalization. It discusses the country's niche actor approach, highlights the pros and cons of its bilateral policy toward the EU, and looks at the link between the setup of its government system and foreign policy. The author argues that the EU continues to be regarded in Switzerland more as a threat than an opportunity.
