This paper examines voting patterns in Malawi and the evolution of the multiparty system established with the 1994 elections. The author argues that the early concerns about the possible entrenchment of regionalism were overblown and that the danger has shifted. He finds that, rather than regionalism and an excess of disunity, the country may now be more at risk of evolving into a one-party dominant system, reflecting perhaps an excess of unity.
