This book analyzes seven national security challenges likely to face the US in the 21st century, including countering global terrorism and the threats posed by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. It discusses the protection of the US homeland, its role in defusing conflicts in unstable regions and engaging other major powers as well as adapt alliances partnerships to transform the US defense strategy. The authors evaluate progress made and pitfalls encountered to address these challenges since 2001. They offer practical strategy and policy options and an integrated strategy to manage US defense and security.
