This paper assesses the economics of adaptation to extreme weather events and the future impact of education and female empowerment on community vulnerability. The authors also examine how climate change could alter the incidence of these extreme events, and how their impact will be distributed geographically. They find that by about 2050, neutralizing the impact of extreme weather events requires educating an additional 18 to 23 million young women at a cost of $11 to $14 billion annually.
