The Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) have come under increasing pressure the past few years to do more than tread water and merely keep the NPT afloat. The forthcoming NPT Review Conference (RevCon) in May is widely seen as the critical moment for progress, with high expectations of the NWS, expectations raised by the renewed attention to nuclear disarmament since 2007 and the poor result of the last NPT RevCon of 2005.
