Since the post-Cold War transition from single-party to multiparty systems, most African countries have embraced elections as their preferred way to transfer power. This policy briefing 1) examines the elections held in 2015 and 2016; 2) calls for extensive structural, legal and policy-related electoral reforms; and 3) argues that adhering to African Union treaty and non-treaty election standards are critical to strengthening democratic processes in Africa.
