For more than half a century an alliance among the farm bloc, large multinational food processors, the US shipping industry, and charitable organizations engaged in relief and development activities in poor countries has supported generous funding for America's food aid program. By law, the food provided through this program is grown in the US, processed and shipped by US firms, and distributed through US based agencies and organizations. Who could lose with such a bargain? Hungry people got fed, farmers got paid, and all the intermediaries did well by doing good.
