The aim of this article is to examine various types of mediators (UN, inter-governmental organizations, states, NGOs, individuals) in relation to the needs of today’s complex peace processes. The authors examine where mediators become engaged (e.g., close or far from home, what type of conflict), how they engage (e.g., degree of impartiality, leverage, sustainability, knowledge, humility, credibility, flexibility) and why they engage (e.g., value- based or interest-based, or both).
