Recently, India has been actively engaging with ASEAN through the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement and through bilateral free trade agreements. As a result, India today is ASEAN’s fourth largest trading partner and eighth highest investor. The northeast region of India, however, has not able to participate in, nor reap the benefits from, India's growing Southeast Asia trade alliances. This Issue Brief describes why this is so and what to do about it, in terms of needed government-sponsored infrastructure projects.
