The emergence of crisis mapping is an example of how an increasing number of citizens now participate in crisis communication. This paper argues that a greater understanding of crisis mapping is needed as a phenomenon and a tool is needed in order to decipher its benefits and limitations as well as any larger political and social effects it may have.
