Given the usual focus on norms, sociological institutionalism is often not perceived as a real challenge to realist or rationalist theories that put power and interests at the center of their explanations. This paper aims to enlarge the framework of sociological institutionalism by covering issues that are usually left out of its analytical focus, specifically power and change. It also provides an empirical case study on institutional entrepreneurship, namely the United States and the field of global crime governance.
