This paper uses case studies from Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam to examine how different types of knowledge can influence policy formation. The case studies show that different types of knowledge by different stakeholders can result in positive outcomes as they establish a more accountable, participatory and transparent local governance environment. The paper concludes with suggestions on the usefulness of developing a taxonomy of knowledge types.
