Over the last decade or more, customary justice systems have become an increasing priority for international organizations working in legal development cooperation. This is because evidence shows that customary justice systems play a much more important role in the lives of many of the world’s poor than do state justice systems. This paper discusses the different versions of customary law and looks at methods to improve the functioning and effectiveness of customary justice systems.
