This brief discusses the importance of fisheries in developing countries. The author argues that the interface between this resource and people’s livelihood has so far been largely overlooked in the development policies of governments and donors. He analyzes the potential for conflict in the fisheries industry and makes recommendations on the type of support that donors can give to fisheries in developing countries.
