This paper synthesizes the findings and main policy implications of new empirical studies on rural livelihoods emanating from the De-Agrarianisation and Rural Employment (DARE) research programme at the African Studies Centre, University of Leiden. The author highlights how amidst high levels of material uncertainty and risk, rural populations in Africa have become more occupationally flexible, spatially mobile and increasingly dependent on non-agricultural income-generating activities.
