This paper discusses issues around human capital, gender and sustainable livelihoods. Human capital is often considered in terms of the new skills which development initiatives should seek to impart. It first outlines the factors that need to be addressed if existing human capital is to reach its full potential (or if vulnerable individuals are to be protected). It then suggests what contribution ergonomics can make to safeguarding and enhancing human capital.
