This policy brief discusses how China’s emergence as a major actor in the Middle East since 2001 has affected US strategic influence in the region. The author contends that areas of convergence do exist, which could provide opportunities for positive engagement and cooperation. He goes on to say that a US strategy involving cooperation and proactive engagement with Beijing on the one hand, while solidifying US hard power primacy in the region on the other, will ensure that China’s rising influence can be shaped to contribute to peace, stability, and development in the Middle East.
