This brief argues that India needs to learn from its past experience which suggests that the use of hard power vis-à-vis neighbours is counter-productive in the long-term. Moreover, the concept of soft power needs to be refined within the larger South Asian regional context. In the South Asian context, the author argues, power should be understood as an ‘ability to accommodate others' concern’ rather than an 'ability to influence’.
