This article discusses the principle of access to justice, and its practical implications for judicial reform. Furthermore, it analyzes the concept of judicial independence as defined under various international agreements, and its relevance to access to justice issues. Among others things, it questions the economic and procedural obstacles to individuals' access to justice, focusing on issues related to legal aid, the ombudsman institution, and alternatives to ordinary court procedures.
