This volume examines how special operations can complement an effective "conventional" defense capability. It determines the means by which special operations could be legitimized as a crucial element in national security policy. The authors argue that in line with an overall strategy of avoiding direct confrontation with the USSR, the US cannot ignore the growth of lesser threats such as terrorism, subversion, insurgency and guerrilla war.
