This book reviews the changing structure of NATO and suggests that the US retains its leadership position over Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH). It is argued that this is all the more important since this is the only US-led regional command in Europe and removing the command link between AFSOUTH and the Sixth Fleet will increase reaction time in crises. Furthermore, the authors contends that the US command can help stabilize tensions throughout the Mediterranean area.
