Based on a study of nine Central and Eastern European countries, this study investigates the Harrod-Balassa-Samuelson effect which links the inflation differential and real exchange rate movements to productivity growth differentials. Following the hypotheses put forward in the literature, the authors elaborate and attempt to evaluate empirically the potential impact of exchange rate regimes on the magnitude of the HBS effect.
