The subject of the paper is the experiences relating to pension fund regulations from the point of view of their safety of operations in five countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The cases are analyzed with reference to when they set up instruments for safeguarding against and reducing the appearance of risk and how they try to achieve a balance between economic and social goals. These institutions can either be set up ex post, meaning after the establishment of the pension funds or ex ante. Taking into account the history of pension funds in other countries, the ex ante road is found to be more difficult. The report ends with recommendations.
