This paper argues that free elections and the advent of an En Nahda party dominated government have led to a rise in identity politics in Tunisia. This does little to address the economic and social problems facing ordinary Tunisians, many of whom are poor. The author argues that things could turn ugly if the politicians continue "fiddling while Rome burns". The good news, he says, will be that, unlike in their recent past, Tunisians will be able to hold accountable those who did not live up to the general expectations and vote for a new government if they want.
