Is Afghanistan at the core Central Asian security or is it peripheral to the genuine security interests of its neighbors? The author of this report argues that although the Central Asian states remain concerned about the instability sparking from Afghanistan, their main focus lies elsewhere. The region’s internal security rivalries and a common need to balance external actors are just two of the reasons why.
