This paper explores Obama's attitudes to, and management of, America’s international alliances. It places Obama's record in historical perspective, challenging the assertions that he has adopted a dangerously new approach. Obama, in fact, sits clearly within the mainstream Democratic Party position on alliances – a position that dates back to the era of Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, when America emerged as a superpower and forged a global alliance network.
