There are limitations to the role of the international community - and especially the United States - in Afghanistan – in both the short and long-run. This paper assesses these limitations by focusing on three different areas: (i) the impact of the domestic pressures on the short-term and long-term strategies towards Afghanistan; (ii) the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) between the US and the Afghan government; and (iii) efforts at reaching a settlement with the Taliban.
