This paper examines the issue of dirty bombs with special emphasis on the USA and UK. The perceived threat of a dirty bomb attack in the US or the UK has increased in recent years. Many experts believe that the immediate casualties and blast damage caused by such an attack would be little more than that of a conventional explosion. Despite this a dirty bomb remains an attractive option to terrorists because of its potential psychologically and financially disruptive impact on a city.
