This paper assesses the US plans for the deployment of a National Missile Defence (NMD) system. The Authors see a cause for concern for the government of the UK, as this plan it have laid down a challenge to the country’s apparent intention both to maintain strong links with the US and to preserve its obligations to multilateral security arrangements. The NMD might throw into question US commitments to the nuclear non-proliferation regime, and risks undermining the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and US-Russian arms control agreements. These developments urgently require a long-term UK strategy.
