This Independent Task Force examines the critical weaknesses of the US K-12 education system and assesses the actual and potential impact on American national security. While the system’s present flaws, including a sclerotic bureaucracy, lacks of incentive for innovation, and few rewards for excellent teacher-performance, are serious and their effects on students severe, the authors nonetheless see cause for hope. The authors recommend three overarching reforms to improve the educational system and enhance America’s future ability to safeguard the country, compete and collaborate with others, and reinforce American leadership worldwide.
