This brief argues that the international economic and financial crisis has brought into question the traditionally understood relationship between society and politics. A concurrently developing phenomenon has been the growing disaffection of the citizenry toward politics, stemming from the proliferation of cases of corruption, patronage, and revolving door policies among the elites. The culture of fatalism is another outcome of the crisis. The author notes that should this be here to stay, this would mean the end of the autonomy of politics as a form of collective action.
