This report examines the strength of Chinese military power and its relation to US military capability. It concludes that China is at least two decades behind the United States in terms of military technology and capability, and that the balance between the two powers, both globally and in Asia, is likely to remain decisively in the United States' favor beyond the next twenty years. This is because the US traditionally has the edge in maritime, aerospace, and technological dimensions of military power, offsetting China's enduring advantage of proximity to Asia. The authors further single out the Taiwan Strait as an area of near-term concern.
