This case study examines the impact of the disintegration of the Soviet Union on Russia's ability to maintain and modernize its strategic nuclear forces. It also considers how Russia's adjustment to the post-Cold War security environment and the realities of its new economic and political systems have resulted in significant changes in the related military and industrial infrastructure. The author gives special attention to Soviet and post-Soviet arms control agreements that have shaped the strategic nuclear triad in both Russia and the US.
