This brief considers the geostrategic importance of China's maritime dispute with Japan in the East China Sea. It argues that while the dispute does not involve multiple claimants, it nevertheless has the potential to become as complicated as the South China Sea dispute. Finally, it considers whether China and Japan would ever go to war to protect their territorial aspirations in the East China Sea.
