This paper looks at Tunisia after the January 2011 revolution. In the context of a persistent economic depression, relations between the trades union and the Islamist government have deteriorated sharply. The paper argues that it would be unwise for the government to confront and further alienate the trades union, concluding that if it shies away from serious economic thinking, Tunisia will enter into unchartered political and economic waters. Already it seems that progress made on human rights and democracy is at risk of being reverted.
