This brief analyzes the symbolic and real implications of the 2006 reopening of the Nathu La mountain border crossing between India and China from a political as well as an economic perspective. The author gives the historical and geographic background and analyzes the reopening from both India’s and China’s perspectives offering proposals on how these countries could benefit further from trade posts in the Himalayas.
