This report discusses United States initiatives to support African economic development. The authors describe the unprecedented US interest in Africa in 1997 and detail the associated visits by then-First Lady Hillary Clinton and then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to Africa. The report examines former President Bill Clinton's establishment of the "Partnership for Growth and Opportunity in Africa" and analyzes how the US can promote greater trade, investment, and economic engagement on the African continent.
