This article examines the US rationale for maintaining its nuclear arsenal (deterrence, providing allies with a 'nuclear umbrella') and analyzes the degree to which the US nuclear weapons policy achieves these aims and whether the current policy is worth the cost. The author also touches upon British and French nuclear policy in the light of austerity.
