This paper offers an assessment of the Amazon Fund which aims to promote the preservation and sustainable use of forests in the Amazon Biome. It first considers the driving objectives of this multilateral climate fund, setting it in its historical context, and the range of financing instruments that it has been able to offer. On the basis of a portfolio review, the authors then consider five interlinked components that are likely to shape whether global funds are likely to be effective in supporting outcomes that address climate change. Finally, they analyze the role of the fund in the global international climate finance architecture.
