This paper looks at the core security dynamics in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf region and examines what shapes the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran and their relations with Afghanistan. Furthermore, it reviews the way in which global powers are involved in the rivalry. The author argues that cooperative security arrangements need elements that do not seem to exist within the region. However, she believes that Afghanistan represents an opportunity for such cooperation, but its neighbors are focused on other security matters.
