This brief examines the significance of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The authors argue that the scale and scope of UNMISS reflects a heightened awareness that sustainable peace must come from local actors. The authors further argue that facilitating this process in South Sudan will be challenging given the bureaucratic structures and limited resources of the United Nations and provide a summary of recommendations aimed at improving the effectiveness of UNMISS and peacebuilding operations more generally.
