This brief explores the value and limits of dialogue in resolving international conflicts. It analyzes three crises - the Russo-Georgian conflict, the conflict between Western powers and Libya, and the dispute over Iran's nuclear program - in which fundamental values have been at stake and where both parties where uncertain about the intentions and actions of the other. Although the authors argue that dialogue is difficult, the brief concludes that dialogue could be improved by promoting mutual respect and trust between those involved.
