This paper reports the results of a field experiment conducted prior to and during the October 2009 elections in Mozambique. The experiment was implemented nationwide and was based on three interventions which provided information to voters and called for their participation in the elections. This was done using SMS technology and a free newspaper. The authors found a clear positive effect of these interventions on voter turnout, but the effects of these on perceptions about politics varied.
