This paper summarizes the results of a survey conducted on the attitudes and opinions held by Mauritian citizens on democracy and governance, the state of their country’s economy, the quality of their political leaders, their sense of personal identity and other related issues. Interestingly enough, the survey also answers the following question – do ordinary Mauritians agree that their country is THE paragon of democracy on the African continent? Although outsiders may see the country in this way, many locals don’t.
