This brief looks at political and economic developments in Algeria from the 1970s up to the terrorist attack on the gas field of In Amenas in January 2013 to explain the situation in the country and where it might be heading. In particular, the author looks at Algeria's role in the Arab Spring and the reasons why it avoided the widespread calls for regime change and the increase in the power of Islamist parties. He also examines the country's economy, including the part played by the countries oil and natural gas resources.
